Is Placing All Your Faith In Modern Medicine Bad For Your Health?

Modern medicine has made huge progress in improving our health and extending our life span, but is our total faith in modern pharmaceuticals causing more problems for us to deal with?

Do you run to the doctor or pharmacy for every ache and pain, or do you have some natural therapies that you try first?

Almost two decades ago, my first daughter made her early arrival into the world and I was instantly besotted. I only wanted the best for her and her health. Like most little ones, she had her fair share of sore throats and ear infections. I would run to the doctor’s for anti-biotics so that she would be well again as soon as possible.

At the same time I started to do some research into possible natural treatments for these common childhood ill’s as I had read enough about giving children too many drugs and that natural resistance to common bugs and viruses are reduced if the body never has to fight them.

I discovered the amazing world of Aromatherapy, herbs, vitamins, massage, reflexology and all sorts of other natural therapies that have been used for centuries to maintain good health!

Now don’t think I am going to spend the next few hundred words telling you to never go to the doctors again, because I won’t! I have great faith in my doctor for things that I know need medical intervention. You won’t see me trying to mend a broken arm with essential oils and a bandaid!

What I would love to do, is open your mind to the possibilites that are available to anyone and why you should consider looking into alternatives that will not only save you money but can help you improve your health or help you maintain it.

Nobody wants to be in pain. It makes perfect sense to take action and get help to fix what is wrong.

A quick trip to the doctors will normally result in a prescription for medication, but when you take the tablets home, do you actually sit and read the leaflet that lists all the possible side effects that might occur when you consume that drug. This is the biggest issue with modern day pharmaceuticals, they cause problems whilst fixing another. Obviously if you have a life threatening condition, looking to alternative medicine for a quick fix is just down right dangerous and you would have rocks in your head if you took that path.

Insomnia is a nasty beast that attacks all of us from time to time. Lack of sleep is so debilitating, and any mother of young children will vouch for how horrible it is to function when you are bone tired. Medication can be prescribed to help induce sleep, and that is a godsend, but those drugs can take hours to leave your system the next day making it unsafe for you to drive. With a few small dietary changes and pure essential oils massaged into your feet each night, will help your body find it’s own natural sleep pattern, drug free.

Stress affects us all at times. We live busy lives and try to achieve so much every day. Stress can be very detrimental to our health both mentally and physically. Medication can artificially trick the body into relaxation but at a cost of other side effects. Adding a magnesium supplement, finding a little ‘me time’ everyday, cutting back on foods that contain stimulants and pure essential oils can naturally increase the amount of seratonin that is moving through your body and this happy hormone will help you deal with everyday pressure so much easier.

One of the most versitile pure essential oils that should be in every house is Lavender. This oil can be used for a multitude of things such as bites, burns, colds, stings, flu, dry skin, nausea, sunburn, hayfever, nosebleeds, relaxation, stress relief, sleep, calming, viral attack, cold sores, acne and more. The list goes on and on. This one little bottle is one of the best aids you can have in your medicine chest.

Pure essential oils are natures pharmacy that modern technology has managed to capture in a bottle. Whilst some essentials must be used with caution during pregnancy or with people suffering from high blood pressure for example, investing in a book from your local bookstore will help you discover how easy and wonderful essential oils truly are. You can slash your medication bill by using pure essential oils for many common ailments.

With so many people turning to convenience foods to put food on the table, and with crops being grown in nutrient deficient soils, it is no wonder that our bodies are lacking in the basic nutrients required for good health. Even the simple step of adding a good quality multi-vitamin to your day, can have profound benefits for your general well-being. Consult a qualified naturopath if you would like to discover more ways of assisting your health naturally.

Good health is one of the greatest gifts we can travel though life with. The body can heal itself in amazing ways if given the right conditions. Letting natures gifts help us achieve this is great for the bank balance and our longevity. Start in small steps. Borrow a few books from the library and start learning. Your health will thank you for it.

I would love to hear your views on natural medicine, and if you have any favourites that you would like to share, please do!

  1. I am just starting to learn about essential oils. My son has a hard time falling asleep. So I have been mixing lavendar essential oil with virgin coconut oil and rubbing it on his feet. I don’t know if it is a mental thing, or if it actually works…’cause he falls asleep fairly quickly afterwards.

    Thanks for your perspective!

    1. Lavender Essential Oil and kids are a match made in heaven. My other favourite is Mandarin, happiness in a bottle, great for when they are upset or scared. 🙂

  2. I agree that more natural treatments should be used when possible. I try to do everything I can at home before resorting to the doctor. I absolutely hate taking medication, and would usually rather suffer through pain than actually take a couple Tylenol!

    1. I try and avoid them too, but sometimes when I have a lot to do, I do take Panadol, but more often than not I find something in my bag of tricks to do the job. 🙂

  3. I am very new to essential oils but have started to build a collection. Are all oils able to be used in food or should we be looking for something in particular? I am thinking of things like orange and peppermint.

    1. I am not a big fan of adding essential oils to food. I prefer to apply topically or use in a burner. Many do follow that path, but it is just not for me.

  4. This is very interesting. I have high blood pressure and am trying alternate methods to help bring it down so my doctor can cut back on my medicine. There is a little progress. But I am open to listening to anyone.

    1. One of my favourite blends is 1 drop of Marjoram, 1 drop of Bergamot and 1 drop of Lavender in a little massage oil, and applied to the base of feet and on to the heart area. Smells devine and helps calm, soothe and reduce pressure. Cut as much salt as possible from your diet, add raw almonds and dried wolf berries for snacks. Just a few handy helpers for you. 🙂

    1. Sugar is still one of my little ‘downfalls’, just can’t quite bring myself to stop it completely. Congratulations on being successful. 🙂

  5. I’ve always had to look into alternative medicine, as seeing scores of doctors and therapies over the years didn’t do anything for my chronic back pain. I found acupuncture, massage, relaxation and meditation to be great natural medicines!

  6. Yes, I believe that placing too much faith in modern medicine is not good for your health. I believe that the earth and the body are very much in tune and that the body can be healed with organic and intuitive methods.

Do you have any nuggets on organic ways to detox the colon or ridding the body of excess mucus? I am open to instruction on this…

    1. Hi Lynnette, if you are feeling a bit ‘clogged’ my plan of attack is to go flour and dairy free for one week. Both of these cause build up of gunk. Drink plenty of lemon water to help flush out the build up, and have a bath with two cups of Epsom salts and 6 drops of Lemon pure essential oil added, twice throughout the week. 🙂

  7. I love this! Since my husband had cancer twice it really made us look at things differently. We definitely look to natural treatment when possible. I love essential oils!

  8. I am a huge believer in both to be honest, and i love most if not all natural remedies cause they work for our family. We are lovers of clove oil, coconut oil and lavender in our house 🙂 We also have to use an all natural sunscreen for my eldest cause he will break out in hives with everything else it seems.

    1. Congratulations on finding a natural solution for sunscreen, it is amazing that so many people don’t look for a natural solution to relieving symptoms caused by chemical compounds. 🙂

  9. Interesting read! My dad has always been a strong advocate of natural medicine. He swears by virgin coconut oil to ease anything and everything. I tried taking it for 2 years (when I was living in another country) and true enough I didn’t have any sickness/illnesses.!

  10. I am with a wellness company that sells household products along with snacks and such and I am so happy I made the switch. Simple things from having petroleum in store brand soaps and detergents to parabens can be such a big bad issue for your health and you dont even realize it until you get rid of that junk and realize you feel better or dont notice your feeling better until your re-exposed and feel sick and go OOOH it does work! Reading your labels isnt good enough anymore. “Green” doesnt mean anything. “Natural” doesnt mean anything. Everyone should do their research before allowing anything to enter their homes!

  11. I have never tried oils but I am not opposed to natural medicine. The side effects of prescription drugs really scare me. This is an area that you really have to do your research. For example, I found a great diet to lower blood pressure called the Dash Diet that is easy, easy, easy.

    1. I have never heard of the Dash Diet, will have a look, so many people suffer from high blood pressure, could add this to my tool kit of suggestions. 🙂

  12. I like warming up cubed onions, put them in a warm damp washcloth and put it on the ear of my kids when they have earache. I love a sugar onion mix and take the liquid which will occur, to ease cough.
I do not think each pain or cold needs a pill, some just need a good rest, lots of fluid and vitamins!

    1. Thanks Britney, may I suggest you start with a bottle of Lavender, it is safe, effective and it will help build your confidence in using essential oils.
      🙂

  13. I’ll have to check our lavendar oil – I have genetic high blood pressure and we’re thinking of expanding our family. I had preclempsia with my 1st pregnancy, so am nervous may help to calm me! When we had sleep problems with LO, my sister suggested a lavendar bath. She swore by it’s relaxing properties, and while it wasn’t a fix -all, it did help calm him to get him ready for sleep. That’s all we use in his baths.

    1. I think every baby should automatically come with a bottle of Lavender. A calm and happy baby is the best way for little ones to be. 🙂

  14. I used to place all of my faith in modern medicine. After a few epic failures on it’s part, I started to learn more and more about herbs, alternative therapies, etc. I was lucky enough to find a holistic doctor who meshed the best of both worlds for a while. I was so sad when he moved!

  15. This is so true. I work at a hospital and I’ve seen the downside of polypharma. People take way too many meds – often to counteract the side effects of the other meds they take. It’s a vicious cycle.

  16. This is an awesome post! I have to admit that I don’t get sick often. I’ve only been to the doctor twice since I’ve been 14 years old. When I get a cold I usually let it clear on it’s own, but sometimes I’ll take over the counter medicine. I get headaches sometimes and immediately take pills! I have always wanted to research a more natural way to get rid of them! I’m taking your advice to start researching…

  17. I love EO for a ton of different things. My kiddos know when they can’t sleep, to get the spray bottle of lavender water and spray their pillows. I can’t wait to read more of your posts. Thanks for sharing.

  18. You and are think so much a like! I too love helping people feel better, lose weight and teach them how to have a healthy lifestyle! I would love to work with you sometime! I have been using essential oils for years now for cleaning… love it! Now I use lavender for deodorant and it works great because it is antimicrobial! Love your page! Thanks for sharing!

  19. I love lavendar. I researched several essential oils to use during birth with my last pregnancy. I need to get those notes back out and get prepared for when this baby comes. Thanks for the reminder.

  20. In short, yes. Research. Be smart. There is no denying the sweet relief of ibuprofen for a headache, but I’ll bet most people don’t realize caffeine works better, quicker, and you don’t need much.
