Favourite Finds This Summer

Summer has sure thrown some hot days at us over the past few weeks and the last couple of rainy days have brought great relief. I love summer but as I can’t spend every day at the beach unfortunately, so I am always looking for ways to make coping with the heat a little easier. Here are some of my favourite finds that have helped me survive the heat wave.

At the beginning of summer Miss WW spent a couple of weekends away at the beach and scored herself some pretty bad sunburn. I keep reminding her to apply ALL the sunscreen ALL the time to protect her beautiful skin, it easy to get caught up in all the fun and forgetting to reapply regularly has not been happening. I tried to get her to use good old zinke stick especially on her nose, but most sunscreens tend to make her break out and she hates that.

dry finish sunscreen helps avoid breakout

After checking out all the sunscreens on the shelf these two have proved to be real winners in our house. Dry touch sunscreen is the bomb! That heavy and sticky feeling that is often experienced with normal sunscreen is no more. Both of these only take a couple of minutes to ‘set’ and you don’t even feel as though you have sunscreen on. Miss WW is happy to reapply regularly and neither of them caused her to breakout. That’s a major win in my books as life in Queensland without sunscreen is just not on.

Wearing long sleeves in summer for sun protection is a great idea, but ahhhh no, its too hot for that! I was invited to a picnic in the park on the banks of the Brisbane river and rain was forecast for that evening and I thought it might get a bit cool once the clouds rolled in.

Cool cotton for hot summer days

This super light, 100% cotton long sleeved top from the Portobello range by Vivid International (gifted) turned out to be a perfect choice and was so cool to wear in the hot afternoon. The best thing about this top is it comes all rolled up and when you wash it you roll it up again and its crinkled look does not require ironing.

Just love the colours in this one!

Hot weather requires cold drinks and tiny little ice blocks that melt in a flash don’t help the cause.

Giant ice blocks are the answer and this awesome ice cube tray was one of my fav finds from Kmart and cost a whole $1.50 each. Buy a few and store them in a large plastic container so you always have plenty on hand.

keep cool with giant ice cubes

Freezing coffee in these and adding one to a glass of milk makes a very yummy iced coffee too!

Just before Christmas my mum went to a charity market and bought three books for $1.00. She liked the look of the covers and thought they would be a good romance novel read. Had she read the back and saw the words such as warlocks and vampires she would have put them back in a flash. I am so grateful she didn’t.

The Infernal devices a great summer read

So not have I only devoured the three part The Infernal Devices book series, I am on the 6th and final installment of The Mortal Instruments.¬†Miss WW has been a big fan of these for a few years and I showed zero interest in reading them. They are thrilling reads will lots of plot twists and I won’t mention that they are listed as ‘Young Adult’ reading….because I am way past that stage of life and just love reading them. This is one of new habits that I have been working on to go with my word of the year ‘Joy’.

The only other thing I need to find is a mascara that will not give me panda eyes when the heat is on. I have tried so many and not one of them has done what it promised! Any suggestions?

Have you found any great things this summer to help you keep cool?….and moving to the Southern States is not an option as I hate winter, even our pretty mild Brisbane version.

How To Read All The Latest Magazines For Free!

save money on magazines

I love magazines!

Sitting down with a freshly made coffee and flipping through the glossy pages is one of my favourite ways to relax.

Unfortunately this can be a very expensive habit, and lots of trees are needed to print the pretty pages.

I currently have a pile of magazines that I am going through, clipping out recipes to try, plus images and quotes/words that I use for making vision boards. When I have finished with them they all go in the recycle bin and very little is actually kept.

I first discovered online magazines a while back when I won a 12 month subscription to ‘O’ Magazine (Oprah’s mag). I have since renewed my subscription twice over, but not anymore.

Thanks to my local library.

I have been an avid library user for decades, as I always borrow a book if possible before I buy it to make sure it is a worthy investment.

My library does have racks full of magazines, but it is very rare that I manage to score a relatively recent copy.

Unless I decide to learn a new craft or something like that, I really have no interest in magazines that are a year or two old.

When I visited the e-magazine section online of my local library, I discovered 150 titles to pick from!

The latest editions of all my favourites magazines are mine to read with a single click.

Best of all I can have access to as many editions as I like, with no return dates and no overdue or lost book fees (yes we have had that happen and found it 6 months later under the front seat of the car).

You will need a good internet connection with plenty of GB’s available to make use of this as most magazines are image heavy and can be quite a few megabytes each or you could end up paying more than the cover price in excess download charges.

Check out your local library online and see if they offer the same, which you would think they should, and while you are at it, grab an ebook or 20 as there are plenty of those available too. This could be the perfect way to learn something new or just make it easier to head to the local coffee shop with your ipad or laptop instead of a pile of magazines.

Now to decide what I want to download first…….so many choices!

Are you a magazine addict too?

A Gorgeous Way To Get Organised And Create A Fabulous 2014!

The start of a new year is a great time to reflect on the year past, and plan where you want to take your life in the future.

If you need a little motivation to get organised, get inspired and move forward, these gorgeous books are perfect.

There is a business edition and a life edition or you can get both, and get totally sorted.

I am a little old fashioned and even though I embrace modern technology for many things, when it comes to diaries and planning, I prefer good old pen and paper. These are not simply books that you just use as diaries, they are colourful and delightful inspiration to help motivate you to reach your goals.

This is one very fun way to get sorted!

You can buy these books in print form, but I prefer the downloadable versions. You simply print them off and store them in a pretty ring binder in plastic sleeves. This not only protects the pages, but gives you somewhere to store ideas and notes. Add a few extra plastic pockets and file receipts, invoices, business ideas, magazine clippings, recipies or anything else that you want to store safely for easy access.

This is the 5th year that Leonie has created these fab work books using both her skills as a life coach and an artist. Order yours today and start printing away, with only a few days left of this year, now is a great time to start rocking towards an amazing 2014.

My Top 5 Reads…..So Far!

On the lounge with a book, is where you will find me if you look!

That is of course providing I am not working, blogging, cleaning, cooking or being a superhuman single mum!

Since I was a little girl, I have always had a passion for reading. Some of my most prized possessions were books that got dog eared and delapedated from over use. Enid Blighton’s ‘Far Away Tree’ was read over and over again. Then it was two books on caring for and riding horses. I devoured every piece of information in these books as we were living in a resort in Fiji where I was able to ride everyday, but had no idea how to when we first got there, so determined to learn, I read and practiced until I could gallop down the beach terrorising the house guests, such fun!

This is what my bedside table often looks like, a huge pile of reading awaiting perusal!

Before children, I would often enjoy reading novels in my spare time (because I actually had some) and I remember one day, when my ex was at work, housework was done, so I sat down to do a ‘little’ reading. I read and read, for the entire day, from front to back, and did not move until it was finished. I even forgot to eat. It’s one of those power plays between the rich and poor and I just loved – A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follet

In recent years, when I do have time to sit down and read, it’s not often that I pick up novels. I love to learn, and prefer to read non-fiction, so I can increase my knowledge and find more interesting things to share on the blog.

I did read the entire Harry Potter series, as I was truly captivated by the clever mind of JK Rowling. Her imagination spun an awesome tale that I did not want to end. They are a must read for everyone.

On my mothers insistance, I did read the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy by Steig Larsson, who sure keeps you guessing. These books broke the normal rule of the first one being fabulous and the following ones being a little so-so. I honestly thought they got better with each one. Unfortunately he has passed away, so there will be no more super suspense thrillers for me to enjoy.

After a very checkered past with money, I knew I had to make some big changes to how I felt about finance if I was not going to let history repeat itself for the rest of my life. Fortunately I found the most amazing book and author, Aussie Sandy Forster who went from welfare to millionaire and shares her collection of tips and tricks for changing your consciousness from poverty to prosperity. I have learned so much from this book it is one of my favourite go to’s when I am slipping back into lack mentality at any time. An absolute must read if prosperity is one of your priorities – ‘How To Be Wildly Wealthy Fast’ is powerful stuff.

Finally my favourite book at the moment, that I just can’t put down, is The Magic by Rhonda Byrne. The power of gratitude is becoming more and more evident. We are all so good at grumbling and complaining at everything that is not working out right, that we simply keep getting more of the same. This book is a follow on from The Secret, and is an entire book dedicated to the power of being grateful and practical ways you can put it into action. This book is on my bedside table and is not going anywhere for the moment……Just love it!

I wonder what my next favourite discovery is going to be?

“The Magic” – A Powerful Life Changing Must Read Book!

On one of my customary visits to the library, I added to my hoard for the day “The Magic” by Rhonda Byrne.

Following on from the phenomenal success of ‘The Secret”, that started a world-wide boom in the Law Of Attraction and how we truly are the creators of our own lives, this book was not being left on the shelf under any circumstances.

Unless you have been living with your head in the sand, we are constantly being reminded to practice the art of ‘Gratitude‘, by giving thanks for all that we have, as this powerful process allows more things to be thankful for to enter your life. If you spend your days grumbling or feeling jealous of others, you will simply attract more of that into your life.

It is no easy task to feel grateful when you are having a bad day and things are just not going your way!

I had no idea that a whole book could be written on that one single topic, but sure enough, each chapter open you up to more ways to give thanks, and how to focus your attention on all the good things that you do have.

This is one very powerful book, with such a simple message, and everytime I sit down with it and read another chapter, I get this warm happy glow, and all the frustrations of the day just seem to melt away. It has been a long time since a book has made me feel this way.

This book is a 28 day journey to change and will help you discover the power of gratitude!

Some of the days include:-

“The Magic Rock”

“Magical Health”

“The Magical way out of negativity”

“The Money Magnet”

“The Magical To-do-list”

“A Magic Morning” and so much more.

Each day gives you focus, exercise and simple practical tools to use.

If you want to open yourself to a more magical way of life, feeling good and feeling grateful is an absolute must and this book is a powerhouse! I am only sorry it took me so long to discover it!

What is your favourite self-improvement book, I am always after new treasures to read?

Thanks For My Addiction To……Reading!

If my laptop is not on my lap, I have a book or magazine in my hands!

For as long as I can remember I have been addicted to reading, even as I child I always had a passion for reading and can not tell you how many times I read ‘The Faraway Tree’ by Enid Blighton. The amazing fantasy world she created just did it for me.

If I could I would subscribe to just about every magazine that makes it’s way on the the shelves. I love the thick glossy paper, alluring photo’s, snipits of information, glorious recipies, amazing clothes, devine hand-bags, or beautiful rooms. When I have a few minutes to spare I just open a magazine.

BUT like all addictions, they come at a cost! Books and magazines are expensive little monsters to buy if you enjoy them at the rate I do. Thankfully, only 5 minutes from home is my saving grace……the local library!

When ever I enter the doors, I leave with just as many books and magazines as I return.

I very rarely read novels, I have a never ending desire to learn, so I am more the self-help guide, recipe, craft kinda gal….I loved the ‘Harry Potter’ series and the ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ collection, but that about as far as my novel reading has progressed over the last few years.

Yesterday’s visit to the library saw me bring home a haul not to dissimilar from this pile.

I got 12 magazines, of which 5 of them are March ’13 editions, and some a few older. It does help if you know what days your favourite magazines are released, as I often visit the library the following day, so the brand new ones are there for you to read (but you are not allowed to borrow) and the previous months hit the shelves for borrowing. Sometimes I get it just right!

If I hear about a book that someone else has suggested as an excellent read, I go straight to the library website and see if it is available, if not I put a hold on it, and they send me an email to let me know it is ready for collection for the pricely sum of 60 cents, absolute bargain.

When I borrow a book that I fall in love with and MUST own, I head straight to Ebay and I can almost always score a copy at much less that normal retail, and about a week later I am the proud owner of that book, yay!

When the girls were younger, the library was a god-send, we would borrow so many wonderful books for them to consume and as their tastes changed and matured, we had access to them, without having a huge collection that no-one was ever going to read again in our house.

I just love the library and feel it is one of the best services the council offer, don’t know what I would do without it!

Do you use a local library to provide an infinite source of reading pleasure, and what is the best thing you have read of late that I can add to my list?

How To Unlock Your Child’s Super Powers – My Book, A Giveaway And An Affiliate Link.

It’s Done, It’s Published, and I am just a little well a lot excited to share with you my new e-book, “How To Unlock Your Child’s Super Powers”!

This book was born from my experiences of 17 years parenting 2 amazing teen girls, all my training as a Natural Therapist, every silly mistake I have made. Coupled with a burning desire to see my girls have the MOST amazing life, with no limits, with no ‘it’s not possibles’, without fear¬†to trying and being healthy to boot!

And where are they right now…..Miss 17 is in Year 12, attending a school set up by the Queensland government for children that are bright and prepared to work their behind’s off. The Queensland Academy For Maths, Science and Technology is not for the feint hearted, it is study at it’s most difficult, using the IB as it’s curriculum. But all this effort produces amazing results and opportunities for kids that are going to go on and do amazing things in the future. She is going to go on to medicine and eventually Neuro Surgery. On top of all that she is ‘addicted’ to Physie, precision dance that saw her make national finals at the Opera House last year.

Miss 13 is also doing very well at the local High School. Whilst her social life is her main priority (which is pretty normal at that age), her choice of future careers changes weekly, but she is incredibly caring and compassionate and hopefully she will find a path when the time is right where she can put those skills to good use.

They both have plenty of wonderful friends, great social lives, stay out of trouble, have adjusted beautifully to the demise of my 23 year marriage to their father, and are truly the light of my life. I love them with all that I am.

I want every child to find their passion, follow their heart, never take no for an answer, and simply shine!

“How To Unlock Your Child’s Super Powers” is over 80 pages of tips, tools and fun!

Everyone is born with amazing powers to create, but so often the values passed on to us by our parents, and life circumstances can see our power being squashed.

I want them to grow up and become passionate, successful and live amazing lives. Everything I teach them now and have done so in the past is already forming who they will become. Staring Mortality In The Face!

Author Blog Challenge – Day 18

Today the author in me is quiet.

Today I am not following the promt.

Today I am staring mortality in the face.

Today I learnt that a guy I went to school with passed away last week.

Glenn was not a good friend of mine, I went to school with him (MSHS Class of 82), I havn’t even seen him since the day we graduated from year 12, 30 years ago. BUT thanks to the wonderful world of Facebook, I was¬†part of his everyday life and me part of his. I knew about his family happenings, how work was going, what he did on the weekends in his spare time….all the wonderful things you share¬†on your page.

Only about 6 weeks ago,¬†Glenn mentioned he had not been feeling well and was off to the doctors. He was prescribed anti-biotics as the doctor thought he had a stomach bug of sorts. The drugs had no effect so he went back to the doctors for¬†and got prescribed a different drug to¬†try. None¬†of them worked, his weight was dropping dramatically and before you could say ‘boo’, he was admitted to hospital, diagnosed with an inoperable, untreatable and incredibly aggressive intestinal cancer.

One week later he passed away! Bang, all over in the blink of an eye!!!!!

Glenn has been laid to rest, his wife and gorgeous kids have to come to terms with their loss, and I am angry at myself for wasting so many precious moments focusing on trivial annoyances, when before we know it, we might no longer be around so that crap means nothing.

Enjoy every moment, give your loved ones a kiss, a hug or a phone call!

Give thanks for everything that you do have!

If your school organises a High School Reunion, like we are having this year in September, go and have a ball, celebrate everything you have been through and acheived! You are luck that you can go, unlike Glenn who won’t be joining our party, but he will be remembered and is now another angel in heaven looking over all of us!

What is the biggest issue you face with your children at the moment?

Author Blog Challenge – Day 16 – Publishing a book on a zero dollar budget!

Day 16 – Did you publish your book as a traditionally printed book, an eBook, or both?

How did you come to your decision?

Delving into the world of publishing is a scary place of unknown! Without a huge budget up your sleeve to buy your way¬†on to the production line and splash out on publicity, there appears to be little chance of¬†reaching success. Lot’s of stories are out there about¬†being rejected time and time again when your manuscript is given the flick. It is no wonder that so many people who would love to be an author, never take the plunge as the future can just be too gloomy to¬†face. Why bother?

Times are changing, and the electronic book is gaining strength, and power. The door is opening for ANYONE to write a book, publish an e-book and start to realise their dream of becoming an author. Through trial, error, internet searching, and signing up for webinar after webinar, I managed to learn enough, and actually get my book across the finishing line on a totally ZERO dollar budget!

I have not spent a single cent to get my first book written, edited, covered and up for sale! I don’t have a hard copy in my hand nor any to sign and give away, but this first step was huge enough for now……..

I will in the near future, continue my learning curve and investigate publishing options for a hard copy version, but not today…….I am grateful I made it this far………will just enjoy admiring the electronic version!

Please share your positive publishing successes, all in the name of research!
