Can Long Distance Friendships Survive?

Throughout our lives friends come and go. Some are destined to be with us forever, others are great at the time and then just seem to fizzle out when distance keeps you apart.

I am very lucky to have two friends, that I went to school with (many years ago) that live in different states to me now.

We can’t get together for coffee like we used to, we can’t just go to the movies at the drop of a hat, but every now and then, we do get together when circumstances allow, and that is good enough for me. Better a little than none at all!

We just go with the flow. We don’t demand that we talk on the phone regularly. We don’t expect to see each other often. Thanks to Facebook, I get little glimpses of what is happening in their lives and they of mine. That is enough for us to keep our friendship alive.

So far this year, I have seen both of them. It’s been 5 years since our last get togethers, but both of them, within the space of 2 months, managed to make their way to Brisbane and went out of their way to make sure we had a get together.

My gorgeous girls and I shared an amazing lunch with my friend Kerrie, who I met 35 years ago!

I have no idea when we will get together again, but I know her door is always open, and hopefully it won’t be another 5 years that pass before the champagne glasses chink together again.

Do you have a long distance friend?

  1. I think long distance friendships are the best as they are the most natural and you don’t have to put in as much effort and if they are true friends they will always be there. My 3 closest friends live 100’s of kilometres away from me and we call, text and facebook each other regularly and we probably only see each other a handful of times during the year but it is always like we were together yesterday. I think that you are right in that Facebook has certainly helped keep friendships together but these girls were in my life before Facebook so I am confident they will be in my life no matter what comes and goes.
Isn’t it funny that 3 of us have blogged about friendships this Thankful Thursday!

  2. I have three long distance friends – two live in South Africa and one in England. I haven’t seen the two in SA for 13 years but we mail/FB and stay in touch that way. The friend in England has been to Sydney a few years ago and we went down and caught up with them there and then two years ago they came to the Gold Coast (to her brother and his family) and we caught up with them again – it’s great that we just seem to pick up where we left off the last time we saw each other.
Have the best day and I hope you get to spend some time with your friends sooner rather than later.

  3. I have a number of long distance friends since I’m an immigrant to the US. When I do visit my country of origin, I try to get together with my old high school friends. Facebook definitely helps keep us up-to-date on the happenings in our lives. What would we do without Facebook?

  4. Hi Nikki

They most certainly can survive! Having emigrated, my schoolfriends (and family) are now scattered around the world. I get to catch up with them when I travel, otherwise technology has made it wonderfully easy for us to keep up with what is happening in their lives!

  5. It is wonderful to have a friend like that. I have a friend who I have known since birth. We both live in Brisbane but on polar opposite sides of Brisbane and we both have busy lives. I haven’t seen her in years…but when we do get together it is like no time has passed at all. xo

  6. I have lived a nomadic life, attending International schools and moving around the world. I have many friends from my international school days and we have found that our connection is stronger than most due to our understanding of our lifestyles growing up. Many of us have formed a bond, meeting almost yearly around the world or at least still staying in touch after 30 years. Friends are high on my priority list so I make sure I look after my friends.

  7. I think if someone is a genuine friend then it doesn’t matter how much time or distance goes between you, that bond will always be there. So glad you got to catch up with your friends. I am counting down the hours till I get to catch up with two of my good friends on the weekend, both that I’ve known since high school and one of whom I don’t get to see very often.

  8. Wow Nikki our posts are very similar right?! I am so grateful to have friends like yours, it makes life much easier, without having to worry if you’ve upset someone by not being in touch all the time. Lovely post, and photo! Emily via Blogs and PR TUST 🙂

  9. I do have a friend JUST like this Nikki, and though we’re in different states, every few months when we get together it’s just like we’ve never had more than a few days between that and our last conversation. Those are the real keepers, for life. Beautiful photo!

  10. I have some wonderful people in my life that I dont see often but like you, Im thankful for fb etc as we can regularly touch base. And, yes, although years pass, its wonderful when we finally see each other. Very special! Thanks for linking up xxxx
