Healthy Hot Chippies

Hot chips are one of the yummiest snacks or meal accompaniment.

Dipped in tomato sauce is just the best.

But with zero nutritional value and oddles of calories, they are not the best choice to eat regularly.

I threw out my deep fryer years ago, so I can’t be tempted to whip up a batch whenever I feel like them.

I have a great way to turn the humble potato into crunchy ‘chippies’ without all the oil and added calories.

They are easy to make and taste great, the kids will love them, and they make a great side to have with dinner, especially if it is something you can cook in the oven seeing it will be on anyway.

HEALTHY HOT CHIPPIES

– Preheat oven to 200C

– Spray a large baking tray with non-stick cooking spray

– Allow 1 potato per person (as a side dish), peel and cut into thin slices

– Arrange the slices on the tray so that none are overlapping

– Brush lightly with olive oil

– Sprinkle with a little salt and sweet paprika (or any other spice you like, such as garlic salt, chicken salt, chilli powder or rosemary)

– Bake for 30 minutes, turning once until golden and crunchy.

Keep your eye on them as they will burn quickly, I may or may not have done this on numerous occasions!

  1. You had me at the word ‘healthy’ followed by ‘chips!’
    A couple of my kids used to be sick after store-bought chips and I put it down to a colourant used in their processing (Anatto or something like that – no idea how to spell it!)
    It’s great to rely on a much better tasting alternative such as these which I will definitely be trying as soon as I have potatoes. 😀

    1. Frozen chips definitely go through processing and who knows what gets added. This way you know there is nothing that you don’t approve of. 🙂

  2. I make these all the time. The kids love them and they’re heaps easier than mash. Short cut version: just spray them with cooking spray once they’re on the tray. No need to wash up a pastry brush (besides which, my two boys stole my pastry brush to paint with. It’s never been the same since).

    1. I tried them with just spray, but the didn’t seem to get as crunchy, that’s why I changed to a little swiping. My girls would be more inclined to steal my brush and use if for applying makeup. 🙂

  3. Ooooh, I LOVE hot chips! But you know, I think for me, it’s the salt that I love most. This is a great way to have the salt but not too much of the carbs. Thanks for sharing! Will definitely be trying it!

    1. I am not the biggest salt fan, I have a super sweet tooth, but I do like to eat yummy things and not feel guilty and these do the trick.
